An Approach to Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) – Mariwala Health Initiative

Re Frame: Beyond Clinical Contexts
‘An Approach to Dance Movement Therapy (DMT)’  :
Kolkata Sanved is very happy that an article co-authored by two of its members- Founder Director, Dr. Sohini Chakraborty, and Project Coordinator, Rhea Kaikobad- has been published in ReFrame, the Mariwala Health Initiative Journal (Issue 3).  The article is titled ‘An Approach to Dance Movement Therapy (DMT)’.

The article describes the Sampoornata approach to Dance Movement Therapy, and explains the way in which this creative, holistic, body-based process moves beyond the clinical context. Embedded in a community-focused and rights-based perspective, Sampoornata gives participants a safe space to break free of the restrictions patriarchal norms impose on the body. It also moves beyond the power hierarchy of expert and patient by centring the lived experience of participants during the sessions, and providing the option for individuals from marginalised communities to train as DMT practitioners and change-makers.
