Dance Movement Therapy Sessions
Kolkata Sanved’s core project, ‘Empowering Lives through Dance’ works with diverse marginalised communities in collaboration with the Government [specifically the Department of Women and Child Development], NGOs and community-based organisations.
Kolkata Sanved conducts DMT sessions at child care institutions run by both the government and local NGOs. The sessions are conducted in groups.
Kolkata Sanved’s approach to DMT is unique since it is practiced in the developmental context. A model for the use of DMT-for-Change has been specially created, with the DMT process being mindfully culturally contextualised to the Indian setting.
Kolkata Sanved’s Sampoornata model was developed to heal and empower individuals from marginalised communities, including survivors of gender-based violence and at-risk children and youth.
There are two kinds of DMT sessions:
- Regular sessions of 2 to 3 hours each [weekly]
- Workshop based session [monthly]
- Day-long workshops conducted for 8 hours at a time
A fundamental principle underlying the Sampoornata model is that survivors can become healers. Through Kolkata Sanved, DMT participants are given the opportunity to evolve into DMT practitioners. In this way, they become agents of change in the community, creating a cycle of transformation in society.
